Vanadium

EcoDem collaborates with leading companies in the sector, for the supply of a service aimed at the recovery of “precious metals”, in particular Vanadium, from the filter cake obtained in one phase of the refining process.

In particular, we are able to provide a patented process that allows to obtain through selective dissolution and an electrolytic process, the recovery of “precious metals” in the form of oxides.

The process to recover mainly vanadium, in the form of pentoxide, from the materials that contain it, in particular from the refinery filter cake, is also available

This is based on three different units:

  • the first is the leaching unit in which the soluble amphoteric elements are brought into solution with a dilute sodium hydrate solution. The non-solubilizable elements, such as Nickel and Cobalt, are left in the residue. This material can be disposed or subjected to further treatment depending on its composition.
  • the second is the electrochemical purification of the solution, where the metals, are precipitated and the caustic solution is recovered with the use of a permselective membrane.
  • the third unit is the precipitation of Vanadium and its conversion into pentoxide according to one of the traditional chemical reactions.

A pilot plant is available for the small-scale verification of the effectiveness of the technology on samples representative of filter cake sludge.

Aluminum - SPL process

EcoDem collaborates with leading companies in the sector, for the supply of a service aimed at the recovery of by-products deriving from the demolition of the electrolytic cells used for the production of primary aluminum.

In particular, one of these companies has undergone a project called “SPL Process” where SPL means Spent Pot Liners, ie the material deriving from the demolition of cells consisting essentially of coal, refractory and various aluminum salts, mainly fluorides.

The SPL process is an innovative process that is used to convert the material coming from the dismantling of the cells for the production of Aluminum, Cut 1 and Cut 2, into products that can also be reused in the Aluminum production process itself.

It is based on two units:

  • the first is the leaching unit in which the soluble compounds are brought into solution making them react with a caustic solution. This reaction results in the cleaning of the carbon matrix (for the Cut 1) or the matrix of refractory material (for the Cut 2) which will then be reused.
  • the second is the electrochemical unit, based on the use of permselective membranes, where in a compartment of these cells some fluorinated Aluminum compounds are precipitated while in another compartment the caustic solution to be used in the leaching unit is regenerated.

It is a closed loop process, hence only reusable compounds will be produced and the reagents will be recycled internally.

Some possible process configurations may require the addition of some chemicals to adjust the composition of the Aluminum-based precipitate in order to produce the most convenient products for both the process and the market requirement.

After carrying out preliminary tests on a small scale cell, a pilot plant is available for installation at site to check the results of bench tests and to evaluate the performance of electrodes, membranes and construction materials for higher flow rates and continuous operations.

After carrying out preliminary tests on a small scale cell, a pilot plant is under construction to check the results of bench tests and to evaluate the performance of electrodes, membranes and construction materials for high flow rates and in continuous conditions.
